Whaddup water pollution?

Have you ever thought about what kinds of pollutants are in your water? Water pollution is any chemical, physical or biological change in the quality of water that has a harmful effect on any living thing that drinks, uses, or lives in it. Their are different types of water pollution. For example: nutrient pollution means that there is too much nutrients and it creates weeds and algae. Oxygen depletion is when too much biodegradable material is added to water, the number of micro organisms increase and use up the available oxygen. Ground water pollution is when drinking water coming from aquafers are polluted. Surface water pollution is when oceans, rivers, or lakes become polluted. We detect water pollution by small samples of water can be analized in a lab to detect water pollution or they can find water pollution through organisms that live in purified water. One of the largest water pollution disasters has recently happened. It was the 2010 BP oil spill in the Gulf of Mexico.

cow poop is good? hmmm....

One farmer started using a machine called a digestor to make his cow poop into energy. It was created to that when you get rid of cow poop, it won't pollute the surrounding area. Another reason why it was created was so that the U.S had a newer and cleaner form of energy. He heats his house with this poop energy and he actually gets paid by the electric company. The digestor also can maake bedding and fertilizer. He also saves money by doing this too. The digestor transfors tiny bacteria particles to methane used for power, and leaves a liquid for fertilizer and a solid for anything else used. This process does take at least 20 days but it is still a huge money and energy saver. The only bad thing about the digestor is that they are not sure if it will create a water pollutant from all the run off poop. This can be done with either cow or pig poop. So now you know that cow poop is good for the enviroment. :)

BP oil spill.

The BP oil spill happened a few years ago in the gulf of mexico. An oil well exploded and tons of oil started leaking and damaging the waters and land. They tried many different ways to stop it and one of the ways was with a containment dome. A containment dome is a 4-story 70 ton structure the company planned to lower into place over one of the 3 leaks to catch the escaping oil and allowed it to be pumped to the surface. They wanted to install a shut-off valve at the site of one of the leaks. Floating booms were also used but were damaged by heavy winds. They also wanted to try cementing, which would seal the well to control pressure from the oil and gas beneath. Another thing they tried to install was a deep water valve, which would be used as a cut off of a last minute resort in explosion. Another device they had was a blowout preventer. The blowout preventer was a device to seal leaks. It did not work properly because natural gas started to seep through the wells. Two other main groups involved in the oil spill was Transocean and Halliburton. BP leased the rig from Transocean, while Halliburton was providing several services on the rig. They say that Halliburton will not be at fault but Transocean may have some investor worry.
